Choosing Your First Crystal: Where Should You Start?

Choosing your first crystal can feel a little overwhelming.

Walk into a crystal shop or start browsing online and suddenly you're faced with hundreds of possibilities. Different colours, shapes, sizes, varieties and names. Then there are all the different meanings and properties associated with them.

So where do you even start?

If you're completely new to crystals, you might wonder whether there's a particular crystal you're supposed to have first.

The good news is that there isn't necessarily one perfect crystal for everyone.

Your first crystal can be the beginning of a really personal relationship with crystals, and sometimes the best place to start is simply with the one you're naturally drawn towards.

What crystals are good for beginners?

There are certain crystals that are often suggested as good starting points for beginners because they are widely available and have a long history of being associated with different aspects of crystal work.

Two that you'll often come across are Rose Quartz and Amethyst.

🌸 Rose Quartz

Rose Quartz is one of those crystals that seems to appeal to people almost immediately.

With its soft pink colouring, it's often associated with love, compassion, kindness and emotional balance.

It can be a lovely crystal to begin with if you're interested in exploring themes such as self-compassion, relationships or creating a gentler relationship with yourself.

And Rose Quartz has a special place in my own crystal collection.

💜 Amethyst

Amethyst is another crystal that is often recommended as a first crystal.

Its beautiful purple colour makes it an obvious favourite, and it is traditionally associated with calm, intuition, spiritual awareness and reflection.

It's also a wonderfully versatile crystal to explore through meditation, carrying with you or simply keeping somewhere you will see it regularly.

Of course, these are traditional crystal associations rather than rules. You don't have to choose Amethyst because you're looking for calm, or Rose Quartz because you want to explore self-love.

That's where things get interesting.

My first crystal was a Rose Quartz pendulum

My first crystal wasn't something I carefully researched or chose because I'd read a list of crystal properties.

It was a Rose Quartz pendulum that was also a bracelet, and it was a gift from my mum.

I still have a soft spot for Rose Quartz because of that first crystal.

And, as you might expect, my collection has grown considerably since then! 😂

I now have lots of Rose Quartz, including some beautiful swan and dragon carvings.

It's funny to think that something as simple as a gift from my mum was the beginning of what would eventually become such an important part of my life and work.

It also reminds me that our connection with crystals doesn't always begin with knowing exactly what we're looking for.

Sometimes a crystal simply finds its way to us.

Do you need to know what a crystal means before choosing it?

Not at all.

This is something I really encourage beginners to remember.

There's so much information available about crystals that it's very easy to fall into the trap of thinking you need to learn everything before you can start working with them.

You don't.

You can begin by noticing what you're naturally drawn towards.

Perhaps it's a particular colour.

Maybe you like the shape.

You might pick up a crystal and simply enjoy how it feels in your hand.

Or perhaps you're drawn to one without really knowing why.

You can always research it afterwards.

In fact, sometimes I think it's more interesting to notice what catches your attention before you know what you're "supposed" to think about that crystal.

Start with curiosity

If you're choosing your first crystal, here are a few questions you could ask yourself:

What colours am I naturally drawn to?

Do you keep finding yourself looking at purple crystals? Blue ones? Greens? Soft pinks? Dark, earthy colours?

Is there a particular crystal that keeps catching my eye?

Even if you don't know its name, make a note of it and find out more.

What am I curious about?

Perhaps you're interested in meditation, grounding, self-reflection, spirituality or simply enjoying the beauty of crystals.

Your curiosity can be a good starting point.

Do I actually like the crystal?

This sounds obvious, but it's worth saying!

You don't have to choose a crystal because someone tells you that it's the one you "need".

If you don't particularly like it, that's okay.

There are plenty of other crystals to explore.

You don't need a huge crystal collection

This is another lesson I wish more beginners knew.

You don't need dozens of crystals to start working with them.

You certainly don't need to know the properties of hundreds of different stones.

One or two crystals that you're genuinely interested in can give you plenty to explore.

You could carry one with you, sit quietly with it, meditate with it, keep it beside your bed or simply notice how you feel when you spend time with it.

You can learn about its traditional associations as you go.

Over time, you might find yourself naturally building a collection based on the crystals you're drawn to and the areas of crystal work that interest you.

And yes, eventually you may need another crystal shelf.

I speak from experience. 😂

Developing your own relationship with crystals

For me, working with crystals is about more than memorising a list of properties.

The traditional associations can give us somewhere to begin, but there's also value in developing our own experiences and observations.

You might find that you have a particular connection with a crystal that you weren't expecting.

You might discover that your favourite crystal changes over time.

Or you might keep returning to the same crystal for years.

There isn't necessarily a right or wrong way to begin.

Your first crystal might be one you deliberately choose after researching it.

It might be a gift.

It might be one you spot in a shop and can't stop thinking about.

Or it might simply be the one that catches your eye.

That's part of the fun of exploring crystals.

So, what should your first crystal be?

If you're completely new to crystals, Rose Quartz and Amethyst are two lovely places to start exploring, but they certainly aren't the only options.

The most important thing is to remain curious.

Explore different crystals. Notice what you're drawn to. Learn about their traditional associations. Try different ways of working with them.

And give yourself permission not to know everything.

Your first crystal doesn't have to be the "perfect" crystal.

It just needs to be your starting point.

And who knows where that first crystal might lead you?

Mine was a Rose Quartz pendulum bracelet given to me by my mum.

These days, I have Rose Quartz swans, dragons and rather a lot of other crystals too. 😂

So I'm curious...

What was your first crystal?

Was it one you chose yourself, or was it a gift?

And do you still have it?

I'd love to hear about it.
